History of Romsley St Kenelm's Scout Group
Work in progress ...
- we're going to build up a history of Scouting in Romsley.
- we're going to build up a history of Scouting in Romsley.
On 26th April 1966 a group of 12 children, aged 8 to 10-years old, met in St Kenelm’s Church Hall in Romsley. The previous week the Rector, the Rev. David Copley had made the announcement at St Kenelm’s School that a new Cub Pack and Scout Troop were opening in the village.
There had been a very successful Scout Group since 1937 but unfortunately this folded in 1954. With the expansion of the village Halesowen Scout District wanted to launch a new Scout Group, and those 12 young people were there on that April night for their first Cub meeting.
After an hour-and-a-half of fun, it was time for the younger children to go home and then 10 older youngsters, aged 11 to 14 years-old, turned up for the first Scout Meeting. The subscription for that first night was 6d (2½p) for Cubs and 9d (4p) for Scouts.
From that very first meeting the Scout Group grew, first moving it’s meeting to St Kenelm’s School before moving into their own Headquarters on the Playing Field in 1976. In 1984 Beavers were introduced for 6 to 8 year-olds and the Scout Group continued to thrive.
Then in 1999, after several years of planning and fund-raising, the Scout Group opened the new state-of-the-art Romsley Scout Centre, offering its facilities to the community at large.
Fifty years on - Romsley St Kenelm’s Scout Group continues to be successful and we estimate that well over 2000 children and young people have benefited in that time.
